Christmas is coming along with Summer – sometime. Blink and you have missed it
Christmas is coming – (did you know?!) As the holidays come closer, we reflect on the year we’ve had and the one that lies ahead. Christmas offers a chance to pause and choose gratitude for small wins and the people who have supported us, whether friends, family or our chosen community. 2024 may have been a year of navigating challenges and building resilience. “Survive to 25” has been bandied by some – if this is you or your business, you’ve done it, well done! Most likely it’s now “Fix until 26” (editors disclaimer “this is not financial advice but offered as a general comment. You should always seek independent financial advice from a registered advisor”).
It’s the time of year for giving, so if you are able to consider a gift to a charity this Christmas that would be nice. As always, Shellock’s charity of choice is World Vision, but we know many charities closer to home will also be so grateful for contributions. For many the mantra of “charity begins at home” is being said at present (excuse the pun). But, if you are looking for a local charity remember “home” could be any person’s “home” assuming they have one. If you are struggling financially, we can all be generous with our kindness and support to family, friends, strangers and local communities. We can choose to create a ripple effect of kindness that extends beyond ourselves.
As we pivot toward 2025, perhaps your head is spinning already – we hope for more of calm sea breezes, and a little less turbulence. Whether striving to survive, working to fix, or appreciating the present, we hope you have a moment to pause this silly season. Here are some of our favourite places to take a break on a budget:
Anne likes to walk in forests for a cool and refreshing break – try the McHughs Forest Park in Darfield with magical fairy doors to discover along the way. Try not to get lost in the woods – Google app does not help. Take a photo of the map, or several small children.
Helen likes to ramble along the Waimakariri with her dog looking up at the Southern Alps, a great spot for sunsets.
Mark likes to cycle among the hills.
Rose likes to … shop!
See you next year. Rest up and remember to breathe.
Last minute reminder – donate those spare Flyby’s points to a charity of your choice. Win Win.
